Reception at Oaklands Primary Academy
Our Reception children have made a fantastic start to their school journey! They have settled beautifully into their new routines, building friendships and growing in confidence each day. Through a balance of play-based and guided learning, the children have been exploring all areas of the Early Years curriculum developing their early reading, writing and maths skills while nurturing curiosity, creativity and independence.
It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for learning shine through as they take part in activities both indoors and outdoors. We are incredibly proud of how well they have adapted to life at Oaklands and look forward to watching them continue to flourish throughout the year.
Early Years Foundation Stage Framework
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum
At Oaklands Primary Academy, our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum provides an exceptional start for children in Nursery and Reception. It offers a rich, balanced, and child-centred approach to learning, fully aligned with the Statutory EYFS Framework. Our aim is to nurture confident, curious, and independent learners who are ready for the next stage of their education.
Areas of Learning
The EYFS curriculum is organised into seven interconnected areas of learning, divided into Prime and Specific areas:
Prime Areas – the essential foundations for lifelong learning:
- Communication and Language
- Physical Development
- Personal, Social and Emotional Development
Specific Areas – building on the prime areas to deepen understanding and extend knowledge:
- Literacy
- Mathematics
- Understanding the World
- Expressive Arts and Design
Each area is of equal importance and together provides a well-rounded, engaging learning experience for every child.
Monster Phonics
We use Monster Phonics – a systematic synthetic phonics programme that’s engaging, accessible, and effective for all learners in our early years and Key Stage 1 classes. Validated by the UK Department for Education and recognised globally, Monster Phonics provides an approach that makes phonics both clear and enjoyable.

Supporting Your Child’s Learning
As parents and carers, you play a vital role in your child’s early education. Throughout the year, our teachers and support staff observe how each child engages with learning, interacts with others, and develops new skills. These ongoing observations allow us to plan experiences that are engaging, supportive, and tailored to each child’s individual needs.
We kindly ask that parents avoid using terms such as “test” or “assessment” when talking about the Reception Baseline Assessment (RBA) or other evaluations with their child. Our aim is to keep the learning experience positive, play-based, and developmentally appropriate.
If you would like to discuss your child’s progress or request a summary of their RBA or EYFS Profile outcomes, please speak directly with your child’s class teacher.

Reception Homework
Homework
Our Wider Curriculum Homework for Reception is designed to encourage children to explore learning beyond the classroom in fun, creative, and meaningful ways. Each week, pupils can choose at least one activity from the Home Learning Jigsaw, which includes tasks linked to personal development, helping at home, nature, maths, literacy, and wellbeing.
Children are encouraged to take photos of their completed tasks and share them with their teacher to earn house points. Completing all activities earns a bonus reward, helping to build motivation and a sense of achievement.
This homework supports our school values and helps children develop important life skills while having fun with family and friends.
