Spanish
Spanish Knowledge Organisers
Intent
At Oaklands, all children learn Spanish. Focusing on one language allows pupils to make strong progress and develop confidence. Our aim is to foster curiosity about other cultures and deepen understanding of the wider world, while equipping children with practical language skills they can use in real-life situations. We want pupils to enjoy learning languages, build enthusiasm for future study, and see themselves as global citizens who value diversity and respect.
Implementation
Spanish is taught through regular, well-planned lessons using the Kapow scheme of work. Lessons introduce and revisit vocabulary and grammar through age-appropriate topics, building from simple words and phrases to more fluent and authentic language. Activities include songs, rhymes, games, and interactive tasks to make learning engaging and memorable.
Children also benefit from a specialist Spanish speaker who teaches across KS1 and KS2, strengthening pronunciation and cultural understanding. Planning includes different levels of challenge so all pupils can succeed, with opportunities for stretch and deeper learning. Spanish teaching at Oaklands builds on prior learning and lays strong foundations for language learning at KS3.
Impact
By the end of KS2, pupils will be able to understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish, use a growing bank of vocabulary confidently, and apply basic grammar in sentences. They will develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and learn about Spanish culture. Learning a language also supports literacy, communication skills, and confidence across the curriculum. Our approach ensures pupils leave Oaklands with enthusiasm for languages and the skills to continue learning in the future.
