Intent
Our Computing curriculum aims to give every child the knowledge and skills they need for the digital world. We want pupils to become confident, creative, and safe users of technology, ready for a future where computers play a key role in most jobs. The curriculum encourages teamwork and problem-solving, helping children learn how to code, design apps, and understand how technology works. It is ambitious, inclusive, and designed to prepare pupils for opportunities that do not yet exist.
Implementation
We use Kapow Primary Computing, which provides a clear, sequenced curriculum that builds knowledge and skills over time. Lessons revisit key tools, such as Scratch, in increasingly challenging contexts to create a spiral curriculum. Children learn through a mix of computer-based and practical activities, so they understand both abstract and concrete concepts. Each lesson lasts one hour and is taught by the class teacher, with resources and videos available to support non-specialists.
Differentiation is built into every lesson so all pupils can achieve the same outcomes at their own level. Teachers use a range of approaches to engage children and assess learning through quizzes, activities, and discussion. The curriculum also includes guidance on online safety and ensures pupils understand how computing connects to real-life situations and future careers.
Impact
Children demonstrate their learning by using key computing skills confidently and applying them in meaningful contexts. They develop a strong understanding of computing vocabulary and concepts, and show progression through varied activities and assessments. By the end of each key stage, pupils will be able to code, design, and evaluate digital projects, work collaboratively, and understand the importance of computing in everyday life. Our approach equips them with the skills and confidence to succeed in a rapidly changing technological world.
