What to expect in Year 6
Year 6 at Oaklands: A Year of Discovery, Growth and Aspiration
At Oaklands Primary Academy, Year 6 is a transformative year—one where children are empowered to become confident, curious, and compassionate learners, ready to take on the world.
Rooted in our core values of resilience, respect, resourcefulness, responsibility, and risk-taking, the Year 6 curriculum is designed to inspire and challenge. Pupils are encouraged to think independently, engage in mature discussions about real-world issues, and develop a strong sense of self and community.
A Rich and Balanced Curriculum
From exploring ancient civilisations like the Maya and Greeks to tackling big questions in geography such as “Where does our energy come from?”, Year 6 pupils dive deep into a broad and exciting curriculum. In English, they journey through powerful texts like The Explorer and Rain Player, while in science, they investigate everything from electricity and light pollution to the circulatory system and evolution.
Maths is brought to life through problem-solving, investigations, and preparation for secondary school, while creative subjects like art, music, and design & technology allow pupils to express themselves and develop new talents.
In May, Year 6 pupils take part in the Key Stage 2 SATs—standardised assessments in reading, grammar, punctuation and spelling (GPS), and maths. These tests provide an opportunity for children to showcase their learning and progress throughout primary school.
At Oaklands, we approach SATs with a calm, supportive mindset. Our curriculum is designed to ensure children are well-prepared without unnecessary pressure. Through regular practice, targeted support, and a focus on wellbeing, we help every child feel confident and ready to do their best.
Cultural Capital
Pupil voice is at the heart of Year 6. Children are given space to express their ideas, listen to others, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Through enrichment days, visits from professionals – such as the Ancient Greek Day, and a wide range of reading experiences, they build the cultural capital they need to thrive in life beyond Oaklands.

Personal Growth
Year 6 is about more than academics. Through PSHE and RHE, children explore relationships, safety, aspirations, and personal growth. They also take part in a residential trip a highlight of the year, where they build independence, resilience, and unforgettable memories.
